Jan has a studio in the Morean Center for Clay, a rehabilitated train station in the Warehouse Arts District in St. Petersburg, Florida. Her studio and classroom look out over the Pinellas Trail, a Rails to Trail project landscaped with native palmetto.
Over her many years of studio practice, Jan’s process has become fluid and intuitive. Pieces are individually and carefully slab-formed. All are unique, but some are created in series. She does not know how the design of each piece will evolve until she begins to decorate. Found objects are often used in tandem with wooden and metal sculpting tools to create interesting, repetitive patterns. Slips and washes are applied before and after the initial firing. The final firing is usually done in atmospheric reduction kilns, giving each piece a completely individual finish. After cleaning and sanding, pieces are ready to be displayed.
Jan welcomes visitors during business hours and by appointment.
